HBO
Queer Art Prize
november 2017
To honor HBO’s long-standing partnership with Queer|Art, a non-profit arts organization serving a diverse and multi-disciplinary community of LGBTQ artists, The Gathery developed and produced the first inaugural Queer|Art Prize aimed at recognizing the significant contributions of select creatives to queer culture. Held at Manhattan’s Hudson Mercantile, we transformed the venue into a curated exhibition hall featuring captivating video installations showcasing the work of over 40 queer artists in disciplines as diverse as performance art, photography, music, painting, poetry and cabaret. The installation offered a sweeping view of the scope of queer expression highlighting poignant issues and stories of the LGBTQ community. Over-sized LED screens projected a series of black and white portraits by Eric McNatt commissioned specifically for the celebration. The event featured touching performances by Kia Labeija and Shea Diamond and awards were distributed to Catherine Opie, for sustained achievement and Reina Gosseett for her intimately political animated short “The Personal Things”.
